Year 2 Curriculum Newsletter
Term 5 and 6 – 2022
Spellings: In term 5 and 6 we will revisit all spelling rules taught in previous terms. We will focus on 200 High frequency words and we will be using ‘Monster Phonics’ to revisit the spelling rules, alongside the ‘Sirlinkalot’.
Writing: In Term 5 we will be writing for purpose. We will be writing letters to YR children to advise them about the Sport Day and we will be writing instructions too. We will be focusing on correct grammar and punctuation in our writing. We will practise to use correct sentences structure, ambitious vocabulary and we will start to structure our writing using paragraphs. In Term 6 we will be writing a character description and a comic strip. We will be studying poems and writing our own.
Reading: In reading we will continue with a focus on developing comprehension skills through whole class Guided Reading activities. The children will also read in groups, one two one and also in whole class guided reading lessons. Reading comprehensions and book reviews will be part of their reading experience. Children are expected to read independently at home all the time.
In Maths we will rehearse addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We will be working on fractions, including recognising and identifying fractions of shapes and numbers. We will also be looking at statistics, properties of shape and comparing and ordering a range of standard measures, length and height. Then we will move to position and direction and telling the time. We will follow the White Rose program and we will use a variety of strategies to practise timetables.
Following the Government Guidance in May 2022 the children will take part in KS1 SATS. In preparation to SATS the children will be practising Reading and Mats on daily basis. There will be also additional Reading and comprehension activities for them to do at home.
Our new topic will be ‘Plants’ in Term 5 and ‘Use of everyday materials’ in Term 6. In June we will be taking part in science class outings were we will be learning in action about plants and we will do ‘Pont Deeping’. Out class trip will be focused on enriching our Year 2 science curriculum.
In term 5 our Geography theme is ‘Map Makers. We will be learning about various maps and their symbols. We will participate in outdoor learning where the children will have an opportunity to make their own 3D maps of the school and also their local area.
In term 6 in History we will be learning about ‘Significant Individuals’ We will be learning about Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole and others.
In Term 5 and 6 we will be exploring 3D designs and scale. We will also be developing printing skills, using variety of materials.
In Term 5 PE will take place on Wednesdays and in Term 6 PE will be on Tuesdays. We will be focusing on our striking and fielding skills in Term 5 and in Term 6 we will be learning Athletics and tennis.
We will be covering the units ‘We are photographers’ and ‘We are researchers’.
We will be learning about Sikhism.
In Term 5 and 6 we will be covering our topics: ‘Friendship songs’ and ‘Reflect, rewind and replay’.
We will be learning to play an instrument.
We will be developing our designing skills. We will be designing and making buildings and vehicles.
We are continuing to follow the SCARF program of study for PHSE. In Term 5 and 6 we will be looking at ‘Being my best’ and we will be talking about ‘Our rights and responsibilities. On daily basis we will be emphasising discussions about acts of kindness, sharing and being the best we can be.
