Transfer to Secondary

We understand that moving on to secondary school is a significant milestone for both children and their families. At Stocks Green, we are committed to ensuring that this transition is as smooth and supportive as possible for every child.

The Transition Process

  • School Allocations: Once secondary school places are officially confirmed by the local authority (usually in early March), the transition process begins.
  • Liaison with Secondary Schools: Secondary schools make contact with us directly to gather key information about each child. Many schools will arrange a visit to meet the children in person during the summer term, often speaking with their teachers to build a full picture of each pupil.
  • Transition Forms: We complete a comprehensive transition form for every Year 6 child. This includes academic progress, learning behaviours, friendship groups, and any pastoral or wellbeing needs. These forms are sent directly to each child's new school.
  • Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND): For pupils with SEND, we ensure all relevant documentation is passed on, including support plans, EHCPs (if applicable), and detailed information about the strategies that have worked well. Our SENCO liaises closely with secondary SENCOs to provide a joined-up handover.
  • Assessment Information: All recent assessment data, including end-of-Key-Stage 2 SATs results and teacher assessments, are shared with the receiving schools.
  • Transition Day: In early July, all Year 6 pupils take part in a national Secondary Transition Day. This gives them the opportunity to spend a full day at their new school, meet their new teachers and classmates, and start to familiarise themselves with the layout and routines of their new setting.

Additional Support

Some children benefit from enhanced transition support. This might include extra visits to their new school, small-group sessions focusing on change and new routines, or individual support from a member of staff. We work with families and secondary schools to identify who may need this additional support and tailor it to each child’s needs.

Working Together

Our aim is to ensure that every child feels confident, informed, and excited about their next steps. We work closely with families throughout the process and encourage parents to talk to us about any concerns they may have.

If you have any questions about secondary transition or would like to speak to a member of our team, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
