Curriculum Overview
Each year group in the school has a unique curriculum that builds sequentially on the previous year group’s curriculum. The full overview for each subject can be found on the curriculum page of the website. However, the specific knowledge and skills that this year group will be learning over the year can be found below.
Homework Expectations:
Homework will be set on a Monday, to be completed by the following Monday. There are also two optional inspirational tasks every term, which can be found below.
Our weekly homework consists of:
1. 10 minutes reading per day, including reading to an adult and being read to by an adult.
2. Five minutes practise of phonics and tricky words twice per week.
3. Five minutes practise of counting in 2s, 5s and 10s twice per week.
Optional Homework Tasks
Term Four
Task One:
Our geography topic this term is Around the World. We are learning about the seven continents of the world and about a countries from these continents. We are learning about things you can see when you visit these countries: human features (features made by humans, such as cities and monuments) and physical features, (natural features, such as mountains, deserts and rivers.) We are looking at where the country is and what the weather is like there. We are also learning about traditional foods that you might eat in these countries.
You can choose any country that you would like to find out about and create a collage about this country. You could draw pictures and stick them onto paper or print pictures. You could include pictures/ information about the capital city of your country. Are there any monuments/ landmarks you could include? Are there any mountains/ big rivers/ lakes in the country? What is the traditional food of the country? Which language/ languages are spoken? You may wish to print some facts or do some writing about the country. You could include a map of the country and its flag.
The National Geographic website for kids has useful information. This is a link:

This link has more countries but fewer pictures:

Task Two:
This is a reading/writing task. The year one common exception words are words that we aim to be able to read and spell by the end of Year One. Have a look through the flashcards below. Which words can you read independently? Can you learn to read the ones that you don’t know yet? Perhaps you could write these words on cards and read them every day until you learn them.
Now can you spell these words? See which words you already know, then make a list of the words you would like to learn to spell next. Start with the smaller words first, building up to the longer words. You could write your spelling words on cards too and keep working on learning to spell these.
You could also use these words to create your own sentences.
You could bring your sentences and word cards into school to show us how you are getting on with them.
Passport of Possibilities
In all year groups across the school, we offer a range of experiences that we believe helps develop children’s cultural capital and increases their opportunities for success in the future. This is a carefully curated list of experiences. The experiences and opportunities specific to this year group can be found below.
