Managing Medicines in School
Medicines will only be administered at school when it would be detrimental to a pupil’s health or attendance not to do so.
Written consent from parents/carers is mandatory (see Medical Form below)
Prescription medicines must:
-
Be in the original container with prescriber’s instructions.
-
Be labeled, in-date, and provided with instructions for administration, dosage, and storage.
Parents are encouraged to time doses to minimize in-school administration. For long-term conditions, parents can request:
-
Timed-release medication.
-
Separate prescriptions for home and school use.
Non-prescription medicines, such as liquid paracetamol, may be administered with written parental consent. Aspirin or ibuprofen will only be given if prescribed by a doctor.
Before administering medication, staff will verify the maximum dosages and the timing of previous doses.
