Curriculum Overview
Each year group in the school has a unique curriculum that builds sequentially on the previous year group’s curriculum. The full overview for each subject can be found on the curriculum path of the website. However, the specific knowledge and skills that this year group will be learning over the year can be found below.
Homework Expectations
In Year 3 we expect the children to read with an adult as often as possible. When reading together, ask your child questions about the characters, setting and events in order to help them understand what they are reading. In addition you can help the children decode tricky words by splitting them into syllables and individual sounds and also discuss the meaning of new and unfamiliar words.
The children will be given spellings to learn each week and they will have a dictation incorporating these every Friday. When supporting your child at home please discuss meanings of words with them and help them use the words in sentences. From midway through the year, times tables will also be assessed on a weekly basis. This year the children will need to add the 3x, 4x and 8x tables to the 2x, 5x and 10x tables they learned in Year 2. However, if these are already secure your child can continue with the other times tables!
The children have a Times Tables National test at the end of Year 4 and we will support them to prepare for this throughout Year Three through classwork, homework activities and website recommendations.
Optional Homework Tasks
Term 4
· Go on a magnet hunt around your house, group together materials on the basis of whether they are attracted to a magnet and identify some of the magnetic materials. Take photos or draw pictures of your findings.
If you would like to complete this activity please ask to borrow a magnet.
· Create your own Invasion Game and try it out with your friends or family. Create a poster with the rules, team numbers, what the outcome of the game is, how a point is scored and what equipment will be needed. Bring this into school and we will play your game.
Term 5
Egyptian
· Research the artefacts which were found in King Tutankhamun’s tomb using a PowerPoint or poster.
· Create a model of an artefact which was found in King Tutankhamun’s tomb.
Term 6
· Explore the park or your garden and pick some leaves or petals, or both. Compare the different petals or leaves, measure the length and width, discuss the colour and texture. Write down your findings and create a collage with your leaves or petals, or both.
Passport of Possibilities
In all year groups across the school, we offer a range of experiences that we believe helps develop children’s cultural capital and increases their opportunities for success in the future. This is a carefully curated list of experiences. The experiences and opportunities specific to this year group can be found below.
