RE

We have specific aims for pupils leaving our school having experienced our RE curriculum. We intend that all pupils become respectful and understanding of different religious beliefs and know about a range of religious and non-religious world views. We ensure pupils have an understanding of different religious festivals and places of worship, enabling them to gain insight into the world of different religions and how this may vary from their own experiences. This is part of our intent because, as a school, we recognise the important role we play in helping children to form inclusive views of the world and aid their development in becoming respectful members of society. Therefore, the development of transferable skills, such as critical thinking, expressing insights, and engaging seriously with diverse worldviews, forms a core principle in our RE curriculum. We intend that pupils express ideas and insights about the nature, significance and impact of religious and non-religious world views. However, we also recognise the school's responsibility in preparing pupils to be informed, responsible, confident and respectful global citizens who understand the significance of religious and non-religious beliefs in shaping society and values.

Our RE curriculum is designed to ignite children's curiosity about religious and non-religious worldviews and develop a coherent understanding of beliefs, practices and expressions. We aim that in every RE lesson children know more and remember more of our curriculum. Our RE curriculum extends beyond the breadth of the National Curriculum to include a rich variety of engaging and exciting enquiries through the lenses of 'Believing', 'Living' and 'Expressing', exploration of Big Questions, visits to places of worship including the Gurdwara in Gravesend, local churches and Maidstone Mosque, and opportunities to engage with Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Judaism and Humanist views. This allows children to develop the transferable skills necessary for future success. This includes engaging with local, national and global religious contexts and making space for pupils' own beliefs and worldviews. Progression of knowledge, skills and vocabulary are all systematically planned so that by the end of Year 6, pupils are ready for the next stage of their education. The teaching of RE in our school is intended to empower pupils with the declarative knowledge (knowing that) and procedural knowledge (knowing how) to enable thoughtful and informed understanding of religious and non-religious worldviews. This knowledge is identified, sequenced and connected in the curriculum.

The knowledge and skills acquired in each year group is set out in our Progression of Knowledge and Skills document, which can be seen below.

The school’s RE Curriculum Statement can be found below.  The curriculum statement provides an in-depth look at the school’s approach to the intent, implementation and impact of its RE curriculum.  This includes, how it is planned, the pedagogical approach to delivery as well as how it is assessed for impact.

Religious Education (RE) - Parental Right to Withdrawal
Parents and carers have the right to withdraw their child from some or all RE lessons at Stocks Green Primary School.

How to request withdrawal
If you wish to withdraw your child from RE, please contact the school to discuss your request. While you don't need to provide a reason, we would welcome the opportunity to:

  • Explain our RE curriculum and how it respects all personal beliefs
  • Discuss how the curriculum is relevant to all pupils
  • Help you make an informed decision about withdrawal
  • What happens if my child is withdrawn?
  • If your child is withdrawn from RE lessons, the school will supervise them during this time. However, we won't provide additional teaching or ask you to supervise your child during school hours.

School trips to places of worship

Parents and carers also have the right to withdraw their child from any school trip that forms part of the RE curriculum. If you have concerns about a particular trip, we encourage you to:

  • Speak with us about what will happen on the trip and how it links to learning
  • Consider attending the trip with your child
  • Understand how the trip supports our responsibility to foster good relations between individuals from different cultures and background
